It has been noted that many MLB pitchers will don a new padded ball cap when they take that mound. It will include a shock absorbing pad inside the cap that will limit the impact of a baseball to the skull.
Most admit that this hat will protect a large majority of the come-backers on the mound, but it can only stop some of the line drives. For example, it wouldn’t have stopped the line drive that Brandon McCarthy took.
Most of the information available points to a joint effort between NEW ERA and EvoShield. They are working on a plan that EvoShield will provide the pads and New Era will insert them into their hats.
The fashion police, (MLB Teams) want to make sure that the pad can’t be seen by the fans. At the very least, they don’t want to pitcher to stick out like a sore thumb. They don’t want to impede on a pitchers routine movements.
Since New Era is the official cap for MLB. I am sure they are in front of this issue and I could see the padded ball cap becoming a mainstay for pitchers in Major League Baseball as well as Little League.
Cheers,
